Project Profiles    TRU Waste Exam & Characterize

Project Name: TRU Waste Examination and Characterization Facility

Customer: Bechtel Nevada Corp.

Site: Nevada Test Site, Mercury Nevada

Project Scope:
Characterize Transuranic Waste contained in 55 gallon drums. Open, inspect, sort and repack waste materials. Repacked drums to meet Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Waste Acceptance Criteria (WIPPWAC). Operations with Contact Handled (CH) Waste required primary and secondary contamination containment systems and negative air pressures for personnel and environmental protection.

Task required a single turn-key contract to design, manufacture, deliver and start up the facility and systems within a 6 month period.

Systems include: Stainless Steel Seismically Qualified Modular Containment Building, Dual HEPA Filtration Systems, Material Isolation & Sorting Glovebox with Fire Suppression System, Material Handling and Repackaging Equipment, Electric Power Systems; Instrumentation & Control Systems and Operator Training.

Project Performance:
NFS-RPS, as primary contractor, managed a team of expert companies to participate in the design and manufacture of the containment systems, electrical system, glovebox, and HEPA filtration systems.

Bechtel Nevada Corp., the NTS operating contractor, provided Architectural Engineering and site Construction Management services for facility installation and ensured DOE Order compliance.

Contract Award on Feb. 3, 1997, Project completed and customer turnover accomplished on June 21, 1997 (138 period of Performance)

Project completed ahead of schedule, under budget and exceeded customer Site Acceptance Test and performance criteria.
