Project Name: Radioactive and Mixed Waste Sorting Station and Containment Facility
Customer: Sandia Corporation, Lockheed Martin Co.
Site: Sandia National Laboratories
Project Scope:
Examine Mixed Waste contained in 55 gallon drums and in Standard Waste Boxes (SWB). Open, inspect, sort and repackage the waste materials into 55 gallon drums. Operations require primary and secondary containment systems and negative air pressures for personnel and environmental protection.
Task required a turn-key contract for design, manufacture and delivery of the facility and (2) radioactive waste sorting station and material handling equipment within a 3 month period.
Project Performance:
NFS-RPS, engineered, designed and manufactured a modular panel containment facility and (2) Radioactive Mixed Waste Sorting Stations with all material handling material equipment.
Modular Containment Facility
A 29'L x 24'W x 12'H two room negative pressure containment building with airlock access control. Work areas divided into a sort station loading room and a sorting and repack operations room. Inter-room access for personnel and through-wall installation of sorting stations. A HEPA exhaust ventilation system maintains the containment at a negative pressure.
Mixed Waste Sorting Stations
Dual sorting stations were provided to maximize throughput.
Dual waste input capability with a 55 gallon waste drum input port on one end of the sort station and a large material loading station for SWB waste materials on the opposite end.
Sort Station 1: (4) Waste drum bag-outs, (7) personnel stations.
Sort Station 2: (3) Waste drum bag-outs, (6) personnel stations.
Raised work platforms for operations personnel.
Drum lifting and rotating equipment for waste-in drum handling.
Drum elevators with turntables for drum bag-out ports.
